The UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Management of Conservation Areas (MCA) at Carinthia University of Applied Sci-
ences provides excellent research and inspiring learning experiences for nature conservation in the 21st century. Its in-
terdisciplinary team has become an internationally visible hub for excellence, innovation and new technologies in nature
conservation with a particular focus on the management of conservation areas. Our work is based on an international,
transdisciplinary, holistic and integrated understanding of conservation areas, as advocated and exemplified by
UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, (natural) UNESCO World Heritage sites and UNESCO Geoparks. Find more information

Junior researcher - Dark Skies and light pollution (m/f/d)
Job profile and tasks
Carinthia University of Applied Sciences is participating in the European research project CE-STARLIGHT (Strategic
Transnational Approach to Reduce LIGHT pollution in Central Europe). It is our task to develop and support Dark Sky
Parks. We are looking for an ambitious junior researcher to support the project manager in the technical and practical
implementation. You will analyse, compile and publish research findings. You will support other European projects in
the field of Man and the Biosphere (sustainable tourism development). Additionally, you will have the opportunity to
develop follow-up projects.
Required competencies and qualifications

Academic qualification (Master) in landscape planning, human geography, ecology, or geology
Excellent understanding of the tasks, needs and instruments in managing light pollution and of the concepts of
Dark Sky Parks

Good moderation skills to lead workshops and other thematic meetings
Proven record in scientific writing and publishing, experience in data handling and analysis (databases, GIS,
statistical analysis)

Proven good command of English and German, spoken and written
Additional languages, experiences in project management and familiarity with the CEE Region are a plus
In addition, we expect a proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, independent way of working and enthusiasm
for the subject, combined with reliability and accuracy. We expect that the candidate will have a driving licence due to
field work activities.
