Austria where education, culture and technology are optimally combined. We ensure modern and application-ori-
ented degree programs in the fields of Engineering, Management, Health Science and Social Work at superbly
equipped FH-sites, with excellent teaching and research staff complemented by part-time lecturers from industry
and international guest lecturers. Further Information you can find on our website:
The `School of Health Sciences and Social Work´ and the `School of Engineering & IT´ are looking for applicants for
the following position:
Junior Researcher – PhD Candidate: Water based epidemiol-
ogy of model viruses in combination with GIS (m/f/d)
Environmental health and geoinformation (EnHeGi) group, a collaboration between GIS and
Biomedical Sciences
Our aim is to design and test a water-based epidemiological (WBE) approach on pathogens in Carinthian waters in order to:
investigate the correlation between the pathogen load in wastewater and the number of infected individuals within the
Carinthian population;
determine the effectiveness of water treatment plants in eliminating pathogens;
. understand the discriminatory power of wastewater analysis to detect pathogen spread within a community, and
. assess the pathogen contamination of water bodies like rivers and lakes.
A geoinformation-based WBE approach will enable the creation of highly accurate spatial and temporal data, thus enabling a better
understanding of distribution of pathogens during epidemiological events.
Job responsibilities
Sampling and analyzing (waste) waters with the appropriate micro- and molecular- biological techniques
Designing and implementing a sampling methodology and populating the geodatabase with the sampled data
Conducting GIS-based bio-molecular analysis and visualization of data and analysis results
Writing of scientific publications and proposals as well as presenting results at scientific meetings

bio)chemistry, public health)
High motivation, independence, diligence, teamwork
Communication skills in scientific research and teaching

the natural sciences as well as the areas of modern technology, health, and environment
The candidate brings expert knowledge of a well-defined area of research obtained during his or her master studies
Experience and/or interest in at least one of the following fields:
GIS background at least at a user level
Molecular or microbiological training or related laboratory experience (e.g. (bio)chemistry)
Interest in obtaining additional education and training in the relevant fields of expertise
