The UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Management of Conservation Areas (MCA) at Carinthia University of Applied Sci-  
ences (CUAS) shall provide excellent research and inspiring learning experiences for nature conservation in the 21st

expand our team, we are currently looking for a:  
Vegetation ecologist for project on AI-based habitat  
classification (m/f/d)  
Job profile and tasks  
In a research project, we will develop, test and apply deep learning algorithms for habitat classification based on remote  
sensing data (satellite, UAV). You will support the project coordinator to assess the user requirements, to match and  
integrate the results derived from remote sensing and field data (ground truthing) on vegetation. You will analyse, com-  
pile and publish research findings. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to develop follow-up projects.  
Required competencies and qualifications  
Minimum academic qualification (master) in ecology or similar, with a strong focus on vegetation ecology  
Very good knowledge of methods in vegetation science and vegetation ecology (sampling design, field surveys,  
analysis, phytosociological classification, with particular focus on non-forest habitats)  
Very good knowledge of classification and delineation of vegetation types (based on species composition and  
structure) and practical experiences in the field (e.g. biotope mapping or similar)  
Good understanding of and practical experience in classification and delineation of vegetation types based on  
remote sensing data (orthophotos, satellite, “drones,” etc.)  
Well-experienced in relevant IT environments (data handling and databases, GIS applications and devices, R  
statistical environment, “basic programming skills are a plus”  
Good command of English, spoken and written  
In addition, we expect a proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, enthusiasm for the subject combined with  
reliability and accuracy.
