The UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Management of Conservation Areas (MCA) at Carinthia University of
Applied Sciences shall provide excellent research and inspiring learning experiences for nature conservation
in the 21st century. Its interdisciplinary team shall become an internationally visible hub for excellence, inno-
vation and new technologies in nature conservation with a particular focus on the management of conserva-
tion areas. Our work is based on an international, transdisciplinary, holistic and integrated understanding of
conservation areas, as advocated and exemplified by UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, (natural) UNESCO World

Vegetation ecologist for biodiversity monitoring (m/f/d)
Job profile and tasks
In a research project, we will develop, test and apply deep learning algorithms for habitat classification based
on remote sensing data (satellite, UAV). You will support the project coordinator to assess the user require-
ments, to match and integrate the results derived from remote sensing and field data (ground truthing) on
vegetation. You will analyse, compile and publish research findings. Additionally, you will have the oppor-
tunity to develop follow-up projects.
These competencies and qualifications are required:

Minimum academic qualification (master) in ecology or similar, with a strong focus on vegetation
ecology
Very good knowledge of methods in vegetation science and vegetation ecology (sampling design,
field surveys, analysis, phytosociological classification)
Very good knowledge of classification and delineation of vegetation types (based on species compo-
sition and structure) and practical experiences in the field (e.g. biotope mapping or similar)
Good understanding and practical experience in classification and delineation of vegetation types
based on remote sensing data (orthophotos satellite & drone based)
Well-experienced in data handling and analysis (digital data collection, databases, GIS, statistical
analysis (i.e. R)), “basic programming skills are a plus”
Good command of English, spoken and written
In addition, we expect a proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, enthusiasm for the subject com-
bined with reliability and accuracy.
