The UNESCO Chair on Sustainable Management of Conservation Areas (MCA) at Carinthia University of Applied Sci-
ences provides excellent research and inspiring learning experiences for nature conservation in the 21st century. Its in-
terdisciplinary team has become an internationally visible hub for excellence, innovation and new technologies in nature
conservation with a particular focus on the management of conservation areas. Our work is based on an international,
transdisciplinary, holistic and integrated understanding of conservation areas, as advocated and exemplified by
UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, (natural) UNESCO World Heritage sites and UNESCO Geoparks. Find more information

Job profile and tasks
The UNESCO “World Heritage Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe” is
a transnational serial property comprising 93 component parts across 18 countries. They represent an outstanding ex-
ample of undisturbed, complex temperate forests and exhibit a wide spectrum of comprehensive ecological patterns
and processes in pure and mixed stands of European beech across a variety of environmental conditions. Carinthia Uni-
versity of Applied Sciences is part of a trilateral joint technical secretariat (Austria, Belgium, Slovak Republic). The main
responsibility of the secretariat will be to set up and develop research and monitoring systems throughout the serial
property.
We are looking for an ambitious junior researcher to support the trilateral secretariat in the technical and practical im-
plementation of management activities. The candidate will analyse, compile and publish research findings and com-
municate intensively with research partners and state parties of the property. Additionally, you will support the devel-
opment of follow-up projects.
Required competencies and qualifications

Academic qualification (Master) in management of conservation areas, alternatively a study with a clear con-
nection to the topic and at least a Master thesis focussing on conservation areas
Excellent understanding of the tasks, needs and instruments in managing UNESCO-designated sites in general
and World Heritage sites in particular
Proven record in scientific writing and publishing and experienced in data handling and analysis (databases,
GIS, statistical analysis)

Good communication and moderation skills
Good command of English, German and at least one additional language of the World Heritage site state parties

spoken and written)

Familiarity with methods and concepts of vegetation science and forestry are welcome
Familiarity with at least some of the World Heritage sites is welcome
In addition, we expect a proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and enthusiasm for the subject, com-
bined with reliability and accuracy.
